Most of its population is mestizo, a mixture of European and native South American ancestry. Quito, the capital city, was a part of the Incan empire. Ecuador is made up of Andean mountain peaks, tropical rainforests, and the volcanic Galapagos Islands, home to numerous animals and birds.
