INTRODUCTION

Winchester is a historic city in the south east region of England.

HISTORY

Winchester dates back to pre-Roman times. It was the capital of Wessex and England until the Norman Conquest. The city was important in the wool trade in the Middle Ages.

Jane Austen died and is buried in Winchester.

ATTRACTIONS

The Great Hall is a remaining part of William the Conqueror's first English castles.

The Winchester Cathedral was built in 1079. Jane Austen is buried here.

Winchester Castle is a popular destination. It holds King Arthur's Round Table, which has hung on the wall since 1463.
