Spain

INTRODUCTION

The largest of the three countries on the Iberian Peninsula, Spain attracts over 50 million visitors every year with it's rich culture and historical sites. Cities like Barcelona and Madrid hold countless galleries, museums, and parks, while less-frequented towns like Sevilla are home to some of the oldest landmarks in the country. The Costa Brava is the Spanish riviera and hosts many interesting villages such as Lloret de Mar.

The Canary Islands, seven volcanic islands of the coast of Africa, The Balearic Islands?, and two small regions on the coast of North Africa, Ceuta? and Melilla?, also form part of Spain.

HISTORY

Spain was one of the most influential regions under the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, Spain came under Germanic control and then later Muslim rule. During this time, Spain grew in economy and culture. In 722, the battle of Covadonga led to the creation of the Christian Kingdom of Asturias. Frankish forces also established Christian kingdoms in the north-east and western part of the Pyrennees. These were called Navarre, Aragon, and Catalonia. In 1469, the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon were united by the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella. Granada was captured in 1492 pushing out the Muslims. This is the year that Columbus sailed to America bringing back golden trinkets and making Spain the first true global empire. However, the strain of many religious-political conflicts led Spain into decline. From 1936-1939, the Spanish Civil War was fought and ended in the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. Democracy and political autonomy was not established until the Spanish Constitution of 1978.
