South Los Angeles

Formerly called South Central, South Los Angeles changed its name in 2003 in hopes of erasing memories of violence and crime in the area. In its history, South LA has seen the Watts riots in the 1960s and the Rodney King riots in the 1990s, the rise of the Bloods and Crips gangs, drug deals, and poverty, leading the area to a state of urban decay and abandonment by white residents. The predominantly black community is still plagued by violence induced by gangs, drugs, and race.

South LA is home to many Los Angeles landmarks and museums, including the University of Southern California (USC) and its Trojan football arena, the Coliseum; the California African-American Museum; and the Watts Towers.
