This park is the largest research park in the world. It is home to more than 100 research and development organizations such as Reichhold, Incorporated, IBM, Cisco Systems, BASF Corporation, Nortel Networks, GlaxoSmithKline and more.
It all began when the Research Triangle Committee was founded in September 1956 to investigate the possibility of creating a research park located between Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1959, Research Triangle Park was created by business, academic and industry leaders.
Recreational facilites available to park employees include four softball diamonds and 12 volleyball courts. It also has 12 miles of jogging trails and a softball league. Cities surrounding the park include Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Cary and Morrisville.
