Parque Del Buen Retiro

El Parque del Buen Retiro is the largest park in Madrid, and has many attractions aside from the natural beauty of the land itself.

Close to the front entrance of the park rests the Estanque del Retiro, or the pond, which lies before the monument to Spain's King Alfonso XII. This expansive monument features a semicircular colonnade and a bronze statue of the monarch seated upon his horse.

One of the most beautiful sights in the park is the Rosaleda Rose Garden. Roses of all different sorts surround the fountain of the fallen angel, which was built around Ricardo Bellver's beautiful statue of Lucifer falling from heaven as described in Milton's Paradise Lost.

Despite all of the beautiful spots, the most incredible sight in El Retiro is the Palacio de Cristal, a glass pavilion built beside an artificial pond that housed a garden. Now the building is open to the public and acts as an art gallery.
