Outer Banks North Carolina

The real treasure in North Carolina is the Outer Banks. If you want to step back in time to a protected area of the United States, this is it.

Hatteras Island is full of history. It has a lighthouse and shipwrecks on the shoreline. A single lane road travels through this area, with small villages such as Salvo, Avon, and Waves along the way. You can also get great deals on real estate during the off-season such as oceanfront homes and more.

If you are looking for more business ventures or real estate opportunities, the larger villages such as Nags Head are about 25 miles north, where Hatteras Island has many small businesses. If you're looking for a Taco Bell or a McDonald's restaurant, this is not the place for you. This area is for the real escapist. If you want some real food, try the Top Dog Cafe?.

You can also play a good game of golf in Nags Head. The Lost Colony in Manteo will you give you a unique look at how the first settlers survived. This area has many open beaches. There are no buildings in sight. Kitesurfing is also a huge hobby here. Another tourist attraction is the The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. This amazing building was moved a few years ago to protect it from the ocean.

Finally, as you drive down U.S. Highway 12, you will spot geese along the side of the road walking about, minding their own business. The pelicans and gulls float along the top of the bridge, while coming in from the north.

If you feed the laughing gulls around the beach, be prepared for them all to show up. You can't feed one without feeding them all. And if you like to shop, try the Farmers Daughter?. The owners have stores to the north and to the south of the Outer Banks. This area is all about natural history. Mostly, you can enjoy the peace and quiet along the coast; all too rare in this day and age!
