INTRODUCTION
Olympia is the focal point of the South Puget Sound region and serves as a regional center for shopping, culture, and entertainment.
HISTORY
The first European visit this area was in 1792 from a crew from the British Vancouver expedition. The land was claimed in 1840 by Edmund Slyvester and Levi Smith and was plotted as a town in 1850. The name was derived from the nearby Olympic mountains. Olympia was named capital of Washington territory in 1853. The town developed around the Puget Sound and became a hub for waterfront and maritime commerce.
