On the outskirts of the city is Kilmainham Gaol. It is old shut down jail where the infamous executions of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising took place. The entrace of the jail is a little daunting with the carving of fierce chained snakes in stone over the doorway. As you take the tour, you get to see the tiny cells in which the prisoners stayed. Not only are they small, but they are made of stone with a slit under the door just so a freezing breeze can come through. Just as impressive is the main hall. Its many staircases and doors shows just how enormous this place must of looked to its prisoners. Also along the tour is the courtyard where the leaders of the Easter Rising were shot. It is a haunting place decorated with crosses in memory of each of the men executed. This is not to be missed by anyone interested in the history of the Republican battle in Ireland.
