Located in Cole and Callaway Counties, this capital city was named after the third president of the United States of America, Thomas Jefferson.
HISTORY
Originally the home of the ancient people called the Mound Builders, thisarea was home to the Osage Indians when the Europeans settlers arrived. The capital was moved here in 1821 from St. Charles. At this time, it was known as Lohman's Landing. This area was little more than a trading post until it was incorporated as a city in 1839.
