Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle is a 90,000 square foot estate built for newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst in 1919. The elegant estate was donated to the state of California in 1957 and has been open for tours since then. Hearst Castle contains an impressive collection of art and antiques. At its entrance are the Neptune Pool and a fašade of an ancient Roman temple that Hearst bought and imported from Italy. Hearst Castle is about 250 miles north of Los Angeles and an equal distance south of San Francisco. The elaborate mansion was the inspiration for the Xanadu house in the Orson Welles film Citizen Kane.
