Girdwood Alaska

This ski resort community is located in the Chugach Mountains near the end of the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet, just 38 miles southeast of Anchorage.

Home to Olympic gold medalist, Tommy Moe, Girdwood was originally called "Glacier City." It was founded as a supply camp for gold miners, with claims along the creeks feeding the Turnagain Arm. It was later named after Colonel James Girdwood, a Belfast-born, Scotch-Irish entrepreneur and linen merchant.

In the winter, you can enjoy therapeutic and adaptive skiing at Challenge Alaska? or snowboarding at the Alyeska Resort. You also have an option of participating in flightseeing and Glacier landings at Alpine Air Alaska, Incorporated? or taking a guided Glacier and Wildlife tour at Glacier City Snowmobile Tours?.

In the summer, you can enjoy cruises and kayaking at Alaska Prince William Sound Charters? or fishing for salmon and trout on the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers at Alaska's Drift Away Fishing?.

In addition, Girdwood has great restaurants, such as Maxine's Glacier City Bistro, Chair 5, and Jack Sprat, which serves Fat and Lean World Cuisine.
