Located at the junction of the Arkansas and Poteau rivers, Fort Smith is in the heart of the Ozark Mountains. This town combines the history of the wild and wooly "Old West" with the gentle charm of the antebellum "Old South."
HISTORY
Fort Smith was a military settlement in the early 1800s to patrol the nearby Native American territory. Later, it was abandoned.
Judge Isaac Parker was famous for being the Ft Smith "hanging judge." In his first term he convicted fifteen out of eighteen people and hung six of them in one day.
