Construction began on Eastern State Penitentiary in 1822 and served as a high-security prison until it finally closed its door in the 1970s. Now it has become a popular tourist spot because of its self-guided audio tours and Halloween events.
Eastern State's audio tour, narrated by actor Steve Buscemi, takes you through several cell blocks and other spots of interest such as death row and Al Capone's cell. The amazing architecture of the old building is both awe-inspiring and creepy. Because many parts of Eastern State are in a state of disarray, it looks like a scene from a horror movie.
There is also a small number of guided tours available that cover special topics related to the prison. Some examples are Escape (which describes three escapes in detail) and Prison Uprisings.
During the Halloween season, Eastern State turns into a haunted house, which is no doubt better than other haunted houses just because of the location.
