Antwerp Belgium

Antwerp is a large city in Flanders, and has one of Europe's biggest seaports.

The city was supposedly named from a legend about a mythical giant called Antigoon that lived near the river.

In the 16th century the city became a center of economy. Antwerp was also the capital of the Dutch revolt.

In the 20th century, Antwerp became the first city to hold the World Gymnastics Championships.

Before and after World War II, Antwerp has been a center of the Haredi Orthodox Jews.

There are several famous and historic churches throughout the city.

The Boerentoren is the oldest skyscraper in Europe.

The Steen is the remains of old citadel. It has been restored and is a popular attraction.

The Grote Markt is the center of the city's medieval district. The Brabo Fountain is found here, with a statue of the soldier Silvius Brabo, the supposed nephew of Julius Caesar. The Stadhuis (Town Hall) is also located here.

The Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten is one of Antwerp's most famous museums, and holds ancient and modern art.
