The Volkstheater was opened in 1889 as a civic counterpart to the Burgtheater. It was originally built to focus on the work of authors. Today the theatre stages many productions from international classics to comedies and musicals. The theater has 970 seats, making it one of the largest theatres in all German-speaking countries.
