HISTORY
England and Scotland have existed as their own independent countries since the 9th century. In 1284 the Principality of Wales fell under English control. In 1707 England and Scotland formed a political union under the Kingdom of Great Britain. Ireland temporarily joined this union in 1801 until the fight for independence broke out in 1922. Since then, only Northern Ireland has been a part of the United Kingdom.
