INTRODUCTION
Tegucigalpa is the capital and largest city of Honduras. It is located in a chain of mountains and, for its high altitude, has a really pleasant climate. In 1998 Tegucigalpa was hit by Hurricane Mitch, which affected the city significantly.
HISTORY
Named for Real Villa de San Miguel de Heredia de Tegucigalpa, Tegucigalpa was founded on September 29, 1578. Its name means "silver mountain". The city became an extremely important mining spot in South America during colonial times. Since then, Tegucigalpa has turned into a modern capital city.

Tegucigalpa is called "Tegus" by its inhabitants. What we know today as Tegucigalpa used to be two separated cities: Tegucigalpa and Comayaguela, with Tegucigalpa the better of the two. Taxi service is not expensive and you can negotiate prices--but it is advised to do so before actually taking a taxi.

LODGING
Real Intercontinental Tegucigalpa and Honduras Maya Hotel are two of the most popular hotels in town. The Marriot is always a great choice, as is the Clarion, which is cheaper than Real Intercontinental Tegucigalpa. But if Boutique Hotels are more your preference then Hotel Portal del Angel is your best bet.
