Syracuse University was founded in 1870. It is a private, research-based university. There are approximately 12,000 undergraduate students and 5,000 graduate students.
Some notable schools that are a part of SU are the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, the School of Architecture, the School of Information Studies, the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Maxwell Graduate School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
The Newhouse School is consistently ranked in the top 3 communication schools in the country. The Whitman School of Management is in the top 10 management schools in the country, and the Maxwell Graduate School has been ranked the number one school of its kind for the third consecutive year.
There are many notable buildings on campus, such as the Hall of Languages, Crouse College, Tolley Humanities Building, Hendricks Chapel and the Carrier Dome. The Hall of Languages was the first building built on campus in 1873. The Tolley Building is a historically preserved building, and Hendricks Chapel is the largest interfaith chapel on a college campus.
The original Syracuse University colors were pea green and pink. The original mascot was the Saltine Warrior. The Native American community in Syracuse found this mascot to be offensive, and the University went on a search for a new mascot. They became the Orangemen, and later just the Orange. The mascot became Otto the Orange. Orange is the school's only official color, with blue often used as the unofficial auxiliary color.
There are several "legends" prominent on the SU campus. One well-known story is of The Kissing Bench, a small stone bench next to the Hall of Languages. The legend says that if a couple kisses while sitting on this bench, they will eventually get married.
The legacy of the #44 is also famous at SU. The number was worn by three All-American football players, Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little. The number has since been retired. Syracuse University changed the exchange of the campus phone numbers to begin with 44.
