Grand Place

Visitors to Brussels will enjoy the grandeur of the extravagant homes and lovely cafes in the historic square called the Grand Place. The square serves as the center of Brussels and is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Standing on the cobblestones in the center of the square, one is easily overwhelmed by the intricacy of the many ornate buildings which form a seamless structure on every side. There is fluidity without monotony in the architecture of the Grand Place. Yet despite the beauty and the history still lingering heavily in the atmosphere, Brussels is a modern city. As such, the Grand Place does not only serve to awe tourists with its antiquity, but is also often the setting for many concerts and events. When the climate is warm it houses a flower market that only adds to its charm. During the holidays and peak tourist seasons the square is transformed nightly by a magnificent, highly charged light show. Combined with the blasting music and the excitement of the crowd, and perhaps a few of those wonderful Belgian beers, it's a great prelude to a night out!

The town hall, otherwise known as the Hotel de Ville, is one of the most noticeable places in the Grand Place and was built in the 13th century. The building’s construction and appearance can be described as Gothic, there is a crooked spire that spans 315ft high and is topped by the angel St. Michael. Tours of the inside are offered where visitors can marvel at the 15th century tapestries and wondrous works of art.
