The Cinque Terre are five coastal villages with colorful homes and a Mediterranean jaw dropping backdrop. The five villages are Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. They are all connected by walks along the mountain sides that separate the villages, a train through the mountains or a passenger ferry service. The most famous route taken is the Via Dell'Amore, or the Lovers Walk, which connects Riomaggiore to Manarola. It is the easiest walk with mainly level ground, and has the myth of the divided lovers described at both ends.
While in Cinque Terre, try some local wines and local cuisine. The area is famous for its pesto sauce, seafood of any kind and Focaccia bread. If you're especially adventurous, try some local grappa which is a very strong brandy made from the pommace left after winemaking.
