The Church of Vera Cruz (true cross) was constructed in 1208 by the Knights Templar to house a fragment of the True Cross. Because of this, the church acts more like a shrine that a parish or monastic church, even though the relic has been moved to a church in a nearby village. Vera Cruz has a very unique 12-sided shape with a tower on the south side, which can be seen from the Alcazar. Inside, the nave is round and centers on a two-story gallery, which is where the knights were thought to keep vigil over the cross.
